Humble and wise, Daniel is that surprise wild card that you are not quite sure what you are going to get, but you stick with it because you can feel its magnetic energy. Part bohemian, part scholar and infused with one wicked dose of intelligent humor, Daniel breaks the inevitable set of stereotypes that our society likes to bestow upon one another. A man who is not afraid to walk along the fringes of life, Daniel uses his artistic abilities not to raise himself up on a pedestal, but to further his collaborative nature and desire to connect more deeply with other majestic minds.

Built on a solid foundation of original styles and textiles and produced right here in Chicago, it is no wonder that Daniel feels passionately about his line. “I like to think of Domestic Workwear in terms of craft beers – you have smaller batches that you pay a little bit more for but you thoroughly enjoy the product and feel great while experiencing it.”

Much like his style, his personality is not meant to be trapped within a confined space; instead it is meant to flourish in its natural surroundings, feeding off all the noise and sound and commotion.

CLAIRE MCCARTHY – ESTATE SALE BUYER & OWNER OF SOCIALISTE

If Winnie Cooper and Kevin Arnold existed outside the realm of ‘The Wonder Years’, magically befriended the Marx Brothers and found themselves tossed into the 21st century, a twist of fate would have undeniably led them to discover Claire and her apartment. Set against a nostalgic backdrop of vintage Zenith radios, carved wooden animals from the 60s, record players, ‘Star Trek’ Barbie and Ken figurines, 1920s cabinets, a plethora of books from every era of literature, and even a vintage gumball machine, Claire’s space speaks a language of its own. Infusing a little of that charm from your grandparents house or a really great secondhand shop with her own unique sense of style, Claire celebrates the essence of culture and, most importantly, the beauty of American life. Delicately standing in a thrifted tank top and silk blend skirt from the Suq al-Medina in Aleppo, Syria, this vintage collecting, quirky, awe-inspiring ball of wit and energy expressed her love for “all weird things in moderation,” the importance of family, her ever-evolving love for fashion and vintage garments, and the endless infatuation she has with Groucho Marx. Tucked inside and what seemed like miles from the ‘doom and gloom’ of February in Chicago, Claire took my mind on a journey through some of America’s greatest generations.

I’ve been thinking about my time spent living in Africa so much recently as I slowly embark on yet another unknown, foreign path of my life, once again overseas. Quite frequently I find myself infused with an abundance of emotions whenever my mind wanders back to the open abyss of the Kenyan grounds, the surrounding lands of Mt. Meru, the majestic backdrops of Arusha’s tranquil atmosphere, and of course, the undeniable affection of the children I lived among and taught at The Peace Matunda School and Orphanage.

 There’s a part of me that struggles with the notion of feeling like so many people remain disassociated from the realities of life over there and the extremely low value and cost of humanity many African regions are inevitably trapped within. As a considerably emotional person, I’ve been thinking and attempting to examine (from an outsider’s perspective, of course) the psychological effects that NGO workers and volunteers have on orphans and children throughout Africa as they form relationships with one another, yet constantly keep coming and going from their lives. I also find myself torn tremendously and slightly ridden with guilt when I truly think about the life I lead here and the lives of my friends over there. I don’t believe this is about being right or wrong, and it’s impossible to fairly compare being born in America as opposed to East Africa, but at times I struggle with wondering which one actually represents a greater amount of long-term happiness. Living in Tanzania I got to experience “living off the land” - afternoons sometimes were spent walking a mile plus down the mountain to buy fresh vegetables and fruits from market vendors, having dresses and clothes made from traditional fabrics in town, and crossing the river to walk some of the children home after school. Once dusk arrived, we’d all gather around the large handmade wooden table, decorated with an assortment of candles, and enjoy dinner with one another, without electricity.

 It’s unfeasible, impractical, and unfair to try and point blame as to who is living ‘right or wrong’ but I’m trying to find the balance for myself.

 And in the end, I think that’s all we can really ask of ourselves as we continuously embark on mind opening adventures. And maybe I’m not actually looking for an answer, maybe just more clues to keep the search going.

Harold: “This is definitely a new experience for me.”

Maude: “Oh, wonderful. Try something new each day. After all, we’re given life to find it out. It doesn’t last forever.”

It’s midnight in Chicago and officially my father’s birthday. He’s been right all along - what I couldn’t see at 16 or 17 makes sense more than ever at nearly 25. Oh, the places you’ll go. This is the man who let me backpack around Europe for two incredible months with my best friend, let me go live in Africa - no questions asked, has allowed me to pursue my obsession and one true love - to be a writer, and has been married to my magnificent mother for nearly 30 years and manages to love her more each day.
